How long does it take to become an entrepreneur?

I’m sitting at home during the covid pandemic considering becoming an entrepreneur, but how long does it take to become one?

An entrepreneur is basically someone who owns their own business so to become one in today’s world it can take less than a day. With the internet, it has become easier than ever to become a business owner. I’m sure you have seen people simply change their Instagram bio to say Entrepreneur because they have created a Shopify store or something similar.

Something tells me you’re not just interested in calling yourself an entrepreneur but actually being successful, and that’s the real question.

Now let’s explore how long it takes to become a successful entrepreneur.

How long does it take to become a successful entrepreneur?

This is a very interesting question that has no specific time answer. Unlike traditional jobs like lawyers and doctors who have a set amount of time in study and exams to pass before they are official, entrepreneurs don’t have that. You can think of it more like becoming a successful singer where there is no set time and the work you put in determines your success. I will tell you that I have researched and it shows on average it can take between one and 10 years. Don’t be discouraged learning from others’ mistakes and hard work can drastically help you succeed faster.

What does it take to become a successful entrepreneur?

There is a combination of things that contribute to an entrepreneur’s success. Some people are born with talents that complement this career path others put in hard work and learn the skills. I am going to highlight 5 things that you can do to help you on your entrepreneurial journey.

Pick your passion

When deciding on which field to go into it will make your life a lot easier if you pick something you like. Being an entrepreneur can be very demanding, early hours/late nights, no vacation ect but if you get joy from what you’re doing it will lighten the load. People who are passionate about their business have a certain zeal that can be seen and felt by others around them, both clients and employees. We as humans like seeing each other happy and inner joy is contagious. This will cause people to like you more and want to do business with you.

Pick your target audience

Ensure you pick a target customer and focus on them. This means to know the group of persons you plan to sell your product or service to. There have been many people who make the mistake of creating a product with no customer group in mind and thus struggle because no one wants to buy their product. Don’t make the same mistake, do the research, and pick a target audience. Successful entrepreneurs know who their customers are.

Take small steps

This is an exciting time at the beginning of launching your new business and there is so much to do. Don’t get overwhelmed by the mountain you have in front of you, take it one step at a time. First, break down everything into small tasks, then tackle them one at a time, and before you know it you will have reached a quarter way up the mountain. Successful people did not start at the top.

Listen to your customers

As a business owner, you now serve your audience, It is your job to cater to their needs. I see too many entrepreneurs disregard their customer’s negative feedback, this is them giving you hints on how to serve them better. Customers know what they want, pay attention to them and you will thrive.

Remember without customers you have no business so keep them happy.
